How to apply for China's Border Administration Area Permit?

Under Chinese law, visitors to certain border regions in China must obtain a Border Administration Area Permit. It’s advised that you call the National Immigration Administration at 12367 to confirm whether you need to apply for a permit if you plan to visit a border region that is not listed on the application form.
1. Who can apply and how?
(1) Chinese mainland residents age 16+ (online application)
Chinese mainland residents aged 16 or above can apply for an electronic permit with a validity period of up to three months through the National Immigration Administration government service platform, including the “移民局12367” app and its WeChat or Alipay miniprograms.
(2) Special categories (in-person applications required)
· Residents of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, overseas Chinese, and foreign nationals
· Chinese mainland residents traveling with children under 16
· Chinese mainland residents applying for an electronic permit with a one-year validity period
Applications must be made at the exit and entry administrations of public security departments at or above the county level, or at designated police stations.
2. Documents you may need
(1) Foreign nationals:
· A standard photo for exit-and-entry documents (It is recommended to take the photo at a designated photo shop)

· A valid passport or other international travel document, or the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Non-Chinese), or the PRC Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card
· If traveling with children under 16, their valid ID and proof of guardianship (e.g., birth certificates or a notarized guardianship certificate) should be submitted.
· To apply for a one-year border permit for employment purposes, applicants must submit legally valid employment materials such as a business license or a labor contract.
