Shenzhen research institute, UAE university launch joint lab

Shenzhen's International Digital Economy Academy (IDEA) and Khalifa University in the United Arab Emirates have established a joint laboratory to advance research in artificial intelligence, robotics and low-altitude aviation technologies.

The two institutions exchanged a cooperation framework agreement and unveiled the laboratory at IDEA's headquarters in Shenzhen on Tuesday.

The partnership will focus on four areas: the low-altitude economy, computer vision and robotics, multimodal intelligence and security technologies, and aircraft and urban microenvironments.

Under the agreement, the institutions will collaborate on research, talent development, academic exchanges, technological innovation and commercialization.

The laboratory plans to launch flagship projects and core research programs, bringing researchers from both institutions together to work on specific scientific and technological challenges.

A seed funding program will also be established for Khalifa University doctoral students, allowing young researchers from the UAE to participate in joint research and explore new research topics.

The partnership will include academic visits, joint seminars and international conferences aimed at strengthening scientific exchanges between China and the UAE.

IDEA, based in the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone, specializes in AI and digital economy research, with an emphasis on translating technological advances into commercial applications. 

Khalifa University, a research-focused institution based in Abu Dhabi, ranks 147th globally in the 2027 QS World University Rankings, making it the highest-ranked university in the UAE.
