Shenzhen has been awarded the title of “China’s Ice Hockey Town” by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in recognition of its role in developing the sport and hosting major international tournaments.

IIHF President Luc Tardif presented the city with a certificate at a recent IIHF congress, recognizing its contributions to Chinese ice hockey between 2023 and 2026.

The recognition follows Shenzhen’s hosting of three IIHF world championship tournaments during the four-year period, including two women’s competitions and one men’s event.

In August 2023, Shenzhen hosted the IIHF Women’s World Championship Division I Group A for the first time. China won all five games to claim the title and secure promotion to the top division for the first time in 14 years.

The tournament returned to Shenzhen in April 2025, when China finished fifth among six teams, retaining its place in Division I Group A.

Shenzhen also staged the 2026 IIHF World Championship Division I Group B men's tournament from April 29 to May 5. China finished runner-up behind Estonia, marking its best result in the men's world championships in 32 years, according to the Chinese source report.

As a partner city in the development of China's national women's ice hockey team, Shenzhen has supported both international competition and the sport's broader development, according to the certificate.

The Chinese Ice Hockey Association plans to deepen its cooperation with Shenzhen by strengthening youth development programs, attracting more international competitions and expanding participation in ice hockey, particularly in southern China.
