Shenzhen recorded nearly 9.2 million tourist visits and 8.79 billion yuan (US$1.31 billion) in tourism spending during the seven-day National Day holiday, according to preliminary official figures released today.

Average daily tourist visits rose 14.2% from a year earlier, while average daily tourism spending increased 12.3%, according to the Culture, Media, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality.

Museums, theme parks and shopping districts drew large crowds during the Oct. 1-7 holiday, with exhibitions, concerts and sporting events adding to demand for leisure activities and shopping.

Museums and attractions draw crowds

The newly opened Shenzhen Natural History Museum was among the most popular cultural destinations, receiving more than 100,000 visits during the first six days of the holiday.

Opened in July, the museum features eight themed exhibition halls housing more than 7,400 specimens, with displays exploring the evolution of the universe, the origins of life and the ecology of southern China.
