4 Shenzhen competitors to represent China at WorldSkills Competition

Four competitors from Shenzhen will represent China at the 48th WorldSkills competition, which opens in Shanghai today and runs through Sept. 27.

Three are from Shenzhen Institute of Technicians. Qin Xiutao will compete in industrial design technology, Du Meiting in graphic design technology and Qiu Shubin in jewelery. Li Wentao from Shenzhen Polytechnic University will compete in restaurant service.

The opening ceremony will be held at 8 p.m. today at the Shanghai World Expo Cultural Center. Skill competitions will take place from Sept. 23 to 26, followed by the closing ceremony Sept. 27.

WorldSkills, regarded as the world's leading international vocational skills competition, brings together young professionals from a wide range of skilled trades and technical fields.

This year's edition is the largest to date in terms of participating countries and regions and competitors. A total of 80 countries and regions have registered for the event, with 1,385 competitors from 68 countries and regions taking part.

China's 220-member delegation includes 71 competitors, who will compete in all 64 skills at this year's event. The delegation also includes 64 experts and 64 interpreters and other staff members.

Guangdong is represented by 17 competitors taking part in 16 skills, accounting for about one-quarter of the skills contested at the event. Another 15 competitors from the province have been selected as reserves.

Shenzhen competitors have established a strong record at WorldSkills. Since 2015, the city has sent competitors to five editions of the event, winning five gold medals, three silvers and two bronzes, along with three Medallions for Excellence.

The four Shenzhen competitors will now seek to add to that record as they take on some of the world's top young skilled professionals in Shanghai.
