Chinese, intl. residents connect at English book salon in Xiangmihu

An English-language book discussion was held at the International Friendship Service Center of Xiangmihu Subdistrict in Futian District yesterday to promote cross-cultural exchange and strengthen ties between local residents and members of the international community.

The event attracted more than 30 local business employees, residents and international visitors. Held against the backdrop of the APEC "China Year," the event aimed to promote international exchange while creating opportunities for Chinese and international residents to connect.

The discussion was led by Lita Murdock, an American entrepreneur who has built her business in Shenzhen and long been involved in grassroots cross-cultural exchange. Conducted in English, the event used Dale Carnegie’s classic book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" as a starting point for exploring sincere communication and building positive interpersonal relationships across cultures.

Participants took part in small-group discussions, sharing personal experiences from their daily lives and workplaces. Lively exchanges and occasional laughter created a relaxed atmosphere, helping participants from different countries get to know one another.

Many participants said the cross-cultural discussion gave them an opportunity to practice English, gain new perspectives and make like-minded friends. Several international residents in Shenzhen also expressed hope that more community-based cultural exchange events would be held in the future.

The International Friendship Service Center serves both as a service hub for international residents and a venue where they can organize and participate in activities. It provides support to help international residents participate in community cultural life.

The center also supports Xiangmihu Subdistrict’s development as an international neighborhood by creating opportunities for local residents and business employees to communicate with and learn English from members of the international community.

According to Xiangmihu Subdistrict, it will continue to explore diverse forms of grassroots cultural exchange and build communication channels among local residents, businesses and international residents. Future activities will seek to offer practical and engaging ways to expand opportunities for interaction at the community level.
