Six Shenzhen universities notch 101 entries in global subject rankings

Six Shenzhen universities recorded 101 subject entries in the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects released today by ShanghaiRanking, with Southern University of Science and Technology’s water resources engineering placing seventh worldwide — the highest-ranked subject among Shenzhen institutions.

Shenzhen University had the largest number of ranked subjects locally, with 40, while SUSTech had 32 and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen had 22.

Engineering and technology-related fields accounted for many of Shenzhen’s strongest results, including telecommunications, robotics, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence and water resources engineering.

SUSTech claims Shenzhen’s highest ranking

SUSTech placed 13 subjects in the global top 50 and 23 in the top 100.

Its water resources engineering ranked No. 7 worldwide. Nanoscience and nanotechnology ranked No. 26, robotics science and engineering No. 30, energy science and engineering No. 31, and environmental science and engineering No. 32.

Control science and engineering, mathematics, biomedical engineering, chemistry, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, telecommunication engineering and materials science and engineering also made the global top 50.

Shenzhen University, meanwhile, had the broadest showing among local institutions, with 40 ranked subjects and 12 in the global top 50.

Mining engineering was its highest-ranked field at No. 18, followed by civil engineering at No. 24, nanoscience and nanotechnology at No. 25, biomedical engineering at No. 28 and instrumentation science at No. 30.

Its artificial intelligence program ranked No. 42.

CUHK-Shenzhen strong in communications, robotics

CUHK-Shenzhen had 22 ranked subjects, led by telecommunication engineering at No. 25 and robotics science and engineering at No. 44.

Electrical and electronic engineering, finance, biomedical engineering, and nanoscience and nanotechnology also entered the global top 100.

Shenzhen Technology University and Shenzhen Polytechnic University each had three ranked subjects, while Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology had one.

How Shenzhen compares

The Shenzhen results come against particularly strong performances from Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Chinese mainland universities recorded 4,077 subject entries this year and held the world No. 1 position in 22 disciplines. Tsinghua University alone ranked first globally in seven fields, including chemistry, mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, nanoscience and nanotechnology, energy science and engineering, and environmental science and engineering.

Shanghai institutions also claimed several world-leading positions. Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranked first in marine/ocean engineering, Tongji University in civil engineering and Donghua University in textile science and engineering.

In Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University topped the world in transportation science and technology and hospitality and tourism management, according to the ranking information provided. Hong Kong City University had 44 ranked subjects, including 22 in the global top 50 and four in the top 10; library and information science ranked third worldwide.

Against those more established higher-education centers, Shenzhen’s results stand out more for breadth across a relatively young university system and for concentration in engineering and technology than for world No. 1 positions.

Ranking covers 57 subjects

The 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects covers 57 fields across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences.

More than 3,000 universities were evaluated, with the published rankings covering nearly 20,000 subject entries at more than 2,000 universities in 96 countries and regions.

ShanghaiRanking says the ranking uses nine indicators grouped under five categories: world-class faculty, world-class research output, high-quality research, research impact and international collaboration.
