SUIT welcomes 6,200 freshmen as enrollment scale and quality rise

Shenzhen University of Information Technology (SUIT) welcomed 6,200 new students September 5 and 6, marking a major expansion in both enrollment scale and student quality as the newly established public vocational university continues its development as a vocational undergraduate institution.

The freshmen, who came from across China, began their university studies at SUIT as members of the Class of 2026. This year marks the second year since the university was upgraded to vocational undergraduate status.

SUIT’s undergraduate enrollment plan doubled from 300 students in 2025 to 600 this year. The number of undergraduate programs also increased from five to 12, with seven new majors introduced: Semiconductor Equipment Engineering Technology, Artificial Intelligence Engineering Technology, Robotics Technology, Intelligent Connected Vehicle Engineering Technology, Open-Source Technology Development and Application, Automation Technology and Application, and Information Security Management.

The new programs are closely aligned with national priorities related to new quality productive forces and Shenzhen’s “20+8” industrial cluster initiative. SUIT also expanded undergraduate recruitment from Guangdong Province alone last year to eight provinces nationwide. For the first time, the university admitted physics-stream students from Sichuan, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Shandong and Henan.

Student admission scores rose alongside the expansion. In Guangdong, the minimum undergraduate admission score reached 573, exceeding the undergraduate cutoff by 148 points and the special control line by 34 points. The score was seven points higher than last year. SUIT’s lowest admission ranking improved by 979 places to 59,430, placing the university first among similar institutions in the province.

The university’s first undergraduate recruitment campaign outside Guangdong also produced strong results. Minimum admission scores in every participating province exceeded the local special control lines by an average of 58 points, while the highest score reached 609. The results reflected the growing recognition of SUIT’s educational quality and talent-development capacity.

A notable feature of this year’s undergraduate education is a more flexible major-change policy. After completing their first semester, students may apply to change majors within their admission major group, with no restrictions on transferring into or out of a program. The policy is intended to give students greater freedom in choosing their academic direction.

All undergraduate programs will also adopt a special-class training model. Through the university’s faculty resources and industry-education cooperation platforms, students will receive joint training from SUIT and leading enterprises. The model combines theory with practice and classroom learning with enterprise experience.

SUIT’s associate degree enrollment also achieved strong results. For applicants from other parts of Guangdong outside Shenzhen, the minimum admission score exceeded the undergraduate cutoff by 56 points. For the first time, the minimum score for Shenzhen applicants also surpassed the undergraduate line. Outside Guangdong, all admission scores exceeded local undergraduate cutoffs by an average of 57 points, with the highest score reaching 563.

The new students arrived on campus with diverse backgrounds and ambitions, but many cited SUIT’s practice-oriented programs, close ties with industry and location in Shenzhen as key reasons for choosing the university.

As a public vocational undergraduate institution, SUIT has aligned its development with national strategies and industrial trends. It is pursuing a model characterized by high adaptability, integration, quality, vitality and contribution.

The university focuses on information technology and offers programs designed to meet industry demand. It has also strengthened cooperation with leading enterprises to create an educational platform that places equal emphasis on theory and practice.
