The Shenzhen International Trade Center (commonly known as Guomao Building) was completed and opened in 1984, standing 160 meters tall. It was the first super-tall building in China.
The building is known for the remarkable construction speed of "one floor every three days," which became a symbol of "Shenzhen Speed" and a concentrated embodiment of the efficiency and vitality of China's early reform and opening-up period. The building adopted an advanced tube-in-tube structural design, with a brown glass curtain wall complemented by white vertical lines, creating a simple yet dignified appearance with distinctive characteristics of that era.
As Shenzhen's first-generation landmark, Guomao Building was once the tallest building in China, carrying special historical significance. Late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping once overlooked the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone from the building and delivered an important speech. The building integrates commerce, offices, and dining, making it one of the largest and most advanced comprehensive commercial buildings in China at that time. Although its height has since been surpassed by later structures, Guomao Building remains an important witness and spiritual symbol of Shenzhen's reform and opening-up history. It has been listed in the Shenzhen Historical Buildings Register, continuing to witness this city's vigorous development.
