Wutong Mountain Scenic Area lies in eastern Shenzhen, straddling Luohu, Yantian and Longgang districts. Its main peak, Great Wutong, rises 943.7 meters — the highest point in Shenzhen. Approved as a provincial-level scenic area by the Guangdong Provincial Government in 1989, it covers 31.82 square kilometers, making it the city’s largest and most ecologically valuable suburban mountain scenic area. The summit is wreathed in cloud for much of the year, and “Wutong Mist and Cloud” is listed among the Eight Scenic Sights of Shenzhen.
Wutong is the source of the Shenzhen River: mountain streams converge into the river, which runs southwest through the city into Shenzhen Bay. The slopes are densely forested, sheltering rare plants such as the tree fern (Cyathea), agarwood (Aquilaria sinensis) and wild orchids. Nearly 2,000 vascular plant species and over 100 bird species have been recorded — one of southern China’s key biodiversity refuges, and a rare “green lung” within the metropolis.
Several hiking routes cross the area, the best known being Taishan Stream, Haohan Slope and the Century-old Trail. The Haohan (“Brave”) Slope, built along the ridge, is a steep stairway and the signature challenge on the way to the summit. From the top, visitors can look east over Dapeng Bay and Yantian Port, west to Shenzhen Bay and the city skyline, and — on a clear day — to the hills of Yuen Long in Hong Kong.
For Shenzhen, Wutong Mountain is both a geographical landmark and a symbol — a mountain whose ecological fabric has been kept intact inside a megacity, and one that lets residents reach “the mountains” within half an hour’s drive. It rounds out Shenzhen’s urban story: a city defined not only by speed and skylines, but also by mist, streams and birds.
