Located in the northeastern part of Shenzhen Bay, Futian District, the Shenzhen Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve covers a total area of approximately 367.64 hectares, including a core zone of 140 hectares. Established in 1984 and upgraded to a national-level nature reserve in 1988, it is the only national mangrove nature reserve located in an urban center in China. In 2004, it was listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, conferring it with international ecological significance.
The reserve is situated at a critical node along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, facing the Mai Po International Important Wetland in Hong Kong across the bay (approximately 3 km apart). Together, these two areas form the Shenzhen Bay wetland ecosystem. Located at the estuary of the Shenzhen River where saltwater and freshwater converge, the reserve is rich in nutrients, providing an ideal habitat for biodiversity. Its location against the backdrop of a bustling metropolis creates a unique "city-sea-forest" landscape pattern.
Rich Biodiversity

Black-faced Spoonbill — a critically endangered species with only about 6,000 individuals worldwide; approximately 10% of the global population overwinters in Shenzhen Bay
Part of the experimental zone is open to the public, equipped with bird-watching hides, boardwalks, and telescopes. From October to March each year is the peak bird-watching season, when large numbers of southward-migrating wintering birds can be observed. Citizens can take Metro Line 9 to Shenzhen Bay Park Station for direct access — very convenient.
The Shenzhen Mangrove is not only a precious natural heritage but also an important window showcasing the achievements of China's urban ecological civilization development.
