New greenway in Luohu offers a green escape

A new benchmark in urban ecological infrastructure has been achieved in Luohu District with the completion of the Greenway Around the Shenzhen Reservoir (Phase II). The newly opened section marks a significant milestone for the city’s “mountain-sea-city” initiative, adding a vital ecological corridor to Shenzhen’s growing network of green spaces.

A 2.2-km escape

The newly completed Phase II stretches approximately 2.2 kilometers, beginning at the southern end of the Wutong Greenway. It meanders through Donghu Park, the right auxiliary dam of Shenzhen Reservoir, and Donghu Hotel, before connecting via Liancui Bridge to Cuihu Cultural and Sports Park, ultimately linking up with the Taojin Mountain Greenway.

This route offers an effortlessly enjoyable experience — flat, gentle pathways with alternating lake and mountain views — making it an ideal escape for all ages for daily relaxation, whether on foot or by bike.

Completing the 30-km loop

Phase I of the greenway opened in early 2025. With the opening of Phase II, a 30-kilometer closed loop now encircles Shenzhen Reservoir — a complete ring of nature woven into the city.

Like a green thread, the greenway links Yinhu Mountain Country Park, Honggang Park, Weiling Park, Buxin Mountain Park, Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, Donghu Park, Renmin Park, and Honghu Park. This interconnected system enriches Shenzhen’s outdoor life, offering residents a more cohesive and unhurried experience across diverse landscapes — from mountain trails to lakeside promenades and botanical gardens.

Highlights along the way

The recommended itinerary starts at the West Gate of Donghu Park and ends at Cuihu Cultural and Sports Park.

Huguang Tower: Standing at 19.5 meters, the tower is the greenway’s signature landmark. Ascend to the top for a panoramic vista of Luohu’s natural beauty, where the tranquility of mountains, the shimmer of water, and the dynamism of the city converge in a single breathtaking frame.

Blue-and-white boardwalk: A blue-and-white boardwalk connects Donghu Park to Cuihu Cultural and Sports Park, a newly unveiled “zero-carbon city park” in Luohu.

Liancui Bridge viewing deck: This rest area offers sweeping views of Wutong Mountain and the reservoir’s shimmering surface.

Cuihu Plaza: Featuring the elevated Huancui Bridge (8 meters high) and a station designed as a “vertical forest,” the plaza impresses with layered ecological plantings that echo the surrounding mountains.

Beaver-themed playground: Cuihu Cultural and Sports Park features a beaver-themed playground with age-appropriate zones. From classic swings, slides, and climbing nets to zip lines, mini trampolines, and water-powered mechanisms, the playground delights children and adults alike.

Taojin Mountain Greenway: Spanning approximately 7 kilometers with gentle gradients, this extension is equally pleasant for walking or cycling. Hiking trails are available for the more adventurous, while casual strollers can stick to the main path. Built along mountains and water, the highest points reveal mirror-like reservoir surfaces framed by Wutong Mountain’s picturesque scenery.
