GBA youth intern at Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau for 6th year

Ten university students from Hong Kong, Macao, and the Chinese mainland had a four-week summer internship at the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau of China Southern Power Grid that concluded Saturday. 

The program provided them with hands-on professional experience and the opportunity to explore career development opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

The participants represented several prestigious institutions, including The University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, Lingnan University, Southeast University, and Xiamen University. 

Supported by China Southern Power Grid, the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau has hosted the annual summer internship program for six consecutive years since 2021, welcoming a total of 43 interns from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan to date.

To help the interns smoothly transition into their roles, the bureau paired each student with a dedicated two-person mentoring team consisting of a young peer and a professional mentor. The peer helped interns navigate daily office routines and familiarize themselves with the workplace, while the mentor provided specialized, one-on-one professional guidance throughout the program.

The program customized internship placements based on the students’ academic backgrounds and career goals, blending structured training with practical experience across various departments.

Students assigned to power big data analysis engaged in digital operations and data analysis projects, gaining firsthand exposure to cutting-edge fields such as electricity and carbon management, vehicle-grid interaction, the Internet of Things, data governance, and trusted data spaces.

Meanwhile, those in customer service roles visited community service centers, worked on electricity projects aimed at improving living conditions in urban villages, and participated in daily customer service operations. Interns in the news and publicity department took part in media relations and event support for the APEC Forestry Ministers’ Meeting, assisted in promotional video production, and helped plan communications for an overseas project in Peru.

These hands-on experiences provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of the GBA's power sector and the vital role of energy connectivity in regional development.

A Macao student from Southeast University noted that the internship sharpened his professional skills and clarified his career goals. "Working on the front line has given me a deeper understanding of China’s development," he said. "Experiencing the progress of electricity services in the Greater Bay Area has also helped me appreciate the broader significance of regional energy integration."

In addition to their daily duties, the interns visited the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone exhibition hall, the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau’s production command center, and a GBA workers’ exchange center, offering them a broader perspective on the region's technological innovation.

A Hong Kong student from Xiamen University shared that the visits highlighted the GBA's status as a hub for high-level research and talent, as well as its open and inclusive environment. He added that the experience has strengthened his resolve to build his future career in the GBA.

The Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau said that it remains committed to supporting GBA development by continuously refining its summer internship program, creating more opportunities for youth from Hong Kong and Macao to gain practical skills and realize their aspirations in the region.
