Public benefit concerts in August

This August, the Shenzhen Concert Hall will present a series of public‑benefit concerts featuring traditional Chinese instrumental music, piano, guitar‑and‑cello duets, Chinese‑style jazz, and harmonica, offering citizens a rich musical journey that spans classical and modern, ethnic traditions and global sounds.

On Aug. 9, Zunling Zhixiu, a renowned ensemble specializing in Lingnan and traditional Chinese music, will entertain audiences with familiar melodies perfect for a leisurely Sunday afternoon. Attendees can enjoy pieces such as “Moonlit Night on Spring River,” “Dream of Splendor,” “Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon,” and “Dance of the Golden Snake,” among others. The group, composed of talented young musicians adept at Chinese instruments, has won accolades such as the Golden Bell Award and has performed alongside acclaimed artists like baritone Liao Changyong and pianist Lang Lang on international stages.

Piano concert

Four young pianists will perform on Aug. 23.

Four young pianists — Li Ang, Lin Ken, Shi Lijia, and Noah Zhou — will perform a concert on Aug. 23. The program will open with two classical medleys, followed by works by Chopin and the majestic “Yellow River Piano Concerto,” and conclude with the beloved song “Story of Spring,” paying tribute to Shenzhen. Among the performers, Li and Lin studied piano in Shenzhen before pursuing advanced studies abroad; Shi is currently a doctoral candidate at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen; and Zhou, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in the U.K., ranked fourth at the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition last year.

Afternoon Music Time

On Aug. 8, young guitarist Ping Tiancheng and cellist Mao Chengyu will perform familiar melodies including Sibelius’s “Etude,” Fauré’s “Sicilienne,” Piazzolla’s “Café 1930,” Li Jian’s “Lake Baikal,” and music from the film “The Legend of 1900.” The duo will present these beloved tunes with delicate nuance.

On Aug. 15, the JazzFunk band from Shenzhen University’s College of Music and Dance will present a Chinese‑style jazz concert. Led by associate professor Chen Yunqiang, this vibrant ensemble will reinterpret classic Eastern and Western melodies with the free spirit of jazz. Audiences will hear jazz arrangements of “Jasmine Flower” and “The Moon Represents My Heart,” alongside new renditions of classic jazz works.

On Aug. 29, Hong Kong harmonica players Allan Ho and Cheung Hoi‑yat will lead the Hong Kong Harmonica Music Center Orchestra in performing Bizet’s “Carmen Fantasy,” Beethoven’s “Minuet,” Verdi’s “Brindisi,” and music from the recent films “Dear You” and “Spider‑Man.” The ensemble will shatter the stereotype of the harmonica as merely an amateur instrument and demonstrate the expressive power of this “pocket piano” by seamlessly switching between the brilliant chapters of classical opera and the moving narratives of film scores.
