BYD captured 4.8% of worldwide vehicle sales during the six-month period, followed by Geely Holding Group in seventh place with 4.6%. Chery Holding Group tied with Ford for ninth at 4.1%.
Together, the three Chinese groups accounted for 13.5% of global sales.
The ranking was compiled by Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association, using sales figures from about 70 major automotive markets. Worldwide vehicle sales reached 47.86 million units in the first half, up 3% year on year, according to Cui’s analysis.
Toyota retained the top position with an 11% share, followed by Volkswagen at 8.1% and Hyundai Motor Group at 7.6%. Stellantis ranked fourth with 6%, while the Renault-Nissan alliance placed fifth with 5.4%.
Three Chinese automakers also entered the global top 10 in the 2025 full-year ranking, although the lineup then comprised BYD, SAIC Motor and Geely. Chery replaced SAIC in the first-half 2026 ranking.
The latest figures reflect the expanding international presence of Chinese automakers. China exported 5.31 million vehicles in the first half of this year, up 53% from the same period in 2025, according to figures compiled by Cui. June exports reached nearly 1.07 million units, rising 73% year on year and 8% from May.
Overseas demand has become an increasingly important source of growth for BYD. The company sold 419,211 vehicles worldwide in July, up 21.8% year on year. Overseas sales of passenger vehicles and pickup trucks more than doubled to 179,841 units, a monthly record.
Its overseas passenger-vehicle and pickup sales totaled about 969,000 units in the first seven months, putting the company close to the 1-million mark well before the end of the year.
