City braces for heavy rainstorms as Typhoon Noul heads toward South China

Shenzhen is expected to experience heavy to torrential rainfall from Saturday night through Sunday night as Typhoon Noul approaches South China.

The Central Meteorological Observatory issued an orange typhoon warning at 6 a.m. today, after the tropical depression east of the Philippines intensified into this year's 12th typhoon. Maximum wind speeds near its center have reached Force 8 (tropical storm strength). The name "Noul" was contributed by North Korea and means "red sky" in Korean.

Noul is forecast to move west-northwest at a speed of 25–30 km/h and gradually intensify. It is expected to enter the northeastern part of the South China Sea between tonight and early tomorrow morning, then approach the coast of Guangdong and Fujian. 

Landfall is projected between Saturday night and Sunday morning along the coastline from Zhuhai, Guangdong, to Zhangpu, Fujian, with wind speeds of 33–40 m/s (Force 12–13, typhoon intensity). After landfall, it is expected to turn northward and gradually weaken.

According to Shenzhen's typhoon tracking website (http://tf.121.com.cn), as of 8 a.m. today, Typhoon Noul was located about 505 km northeast of Manila, Philippines, with maximum sustained winds of 20 m/s (Force 8), a central minimum pressure of 995 hPa, and a distance of 1,134 km from Shenzhen.

The Shenzhen Weather Bureau reports that much of Guangdong will continue to experience widespread high temperatures today and tomorrow.
