Shenzhen’s subway network has rolled out expanded “cooling areas” at 24 stations across six lines this summer, according to the Shenzhen Metro Group. Thoughtfully integrated into station public spaces, these rest zones offer passengers a shaded refuge from the heat.

Beyond standard seating, the cooling area at the transfer hub Gangxia North Station incorporates a children’s reading corner and provides complimentary drinking water and heatstroke-prevention supplies. At Honghu Station, the space is enhanced with lotus-themed murals, creating a more relaxing atmosphere for commuters taking a break.

First introduced as a pilot program in 2024, the temporary cooling shelters initially operated at seven stations with relatively low passenger traffic. Since the start of this year’s 40-day Sanfu period — the traditional Chinese “dog days” beginning July 15 and known as the year’s hottest stretch — these air-conditioned rest areas have become a welcome, compassionate response to extreme summer heat.
