Rail ticketing policies for students during the summer peak

China’s national railway network is projected to handle 1.01 billion passenger trips during the 62-day summer travel peak, which runs from July 1 to August 31, according to the national railway operator.

The summer period is traditionally one of the busiest seasons for rail travel, driven by college students returning home and families taking holidays. To meet surging demand, railway authorities offer discounted fares for eligible students.

Students can complete identity verification via facial recognition on the 12306 app by submitting valid documentation.

The discount covers a wide range of seating options, including second-class, standard, first-class seats, and EMU sleepers.

Both incoming freshmen and 2026 graduates are eligible for fare discounts. Freshmen may purchase a one-time discounted ticket from their hometown to admitting university upon presentation of an admission letter prior to the start of the academic year. Graduates are entitled to six discounted trips until September 30. Student tickets can be booked up to 16 days in advance.
