'Minions & Monsters' to hit Chinese mainland theaters this Friday

One of this summer's most anticipated family animated films is heading to the big screen — "Minions & Monsters" will open in Chinese mainland theaters this Friday. 

The film is the third installment in the "Minions" series and the seventh in the "Despicable Me" installment. Featuring an original story, it is set in 1920s Hollywood, before the Minions' encounter with Gru.

"Minions & Monsters" unfolds as the Minions seek to make their own monster movie. But when they accidentally unleash a giant creature, their filmmaking adventure quickly turns into a mission to save the world.

The film marks the return of Pierre Coffin, who helmed the first three "Despicable Me" films as well as the first "Minions" film, as director. He has also provided the iconic voices of the Minions since the characters made their big-screen debut.

Debuted in "Despicable Me" in 2010, the Minions quickly became a global IP thanks to their distinctive appearance, playful language and mischievous antics. Together, the "Despicable Me" and "Minions" films have grossed close to US$5 billion worldwide, making the franchise one of the most successful animated series of all time.
