Commuting in the Shenzhen metropolitan area is set to accelerate further over the next five years, according to a plan recently unveiled by the central authorities — which identifies Shenzhen as a key focus. Under the plan, about 73% of the population in major metropolitan areas will be able to commute within one hour, and by 2030 that coverage is expected to reach 75%. The plan also prioritizes the construction of the Shenzhen–Daya Bay Intercity Railway, the Shenzhen airport- Qianhai segment of the Guangzhou–Dongguan–Shenzhen Intercity Railway, and the Xili Comprehensive Transport Hub in Nanshan District. Nationally, around 300 million people commute within metropolitan areas every day.
