Shenzhen-Hong Kong Classical Theater Revival Exchange Week kicks off

The Shenzhen-Hong Kong Classical Theater Revival Exchange Week officially opened June 9 at the Antuoshan Public Cultural Center.

The event was inaugurated by Pu Cunxin, the renowned actor and president of the China Theater Association, and representatives of young theater directors from Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao.

Guided by the vision of "ensuring every voice is heard and every new talent has a platform," the exchange week aims to foster cultural synergy across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

A major highlight of the week is the Sino-Tibetan bilingual production of "Hamlet." Directed by Pu and performed by the Tibet Autonomous Region Drama Troupe, the play offers a unique cultural perspective on William Shakespeare’s masterpiece.

"A classic is never a dusty relic. Its vitality lies in the fresh interpretations each generation brings through their own lived experiences," Pu said.

Participants agreed that the geographical proximity and shared cultural heritage of Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao create a unique advantage for artistic exchange. Futian District, in particular, was highlighted as a fertile ground for theatrical innovation due to its concentration of creative resources.

Young creators also noted the pivotal role of social media platforms such as Xiaohongshu in modernizing theater culture. These platforms have become essential channels for audience engagement, promotion, and creative dialogue within the GBA.

In addition to "Hamlet," from June 12 to 21, a series of theater productions will be staged.

"She Knows," created by acclaimed Chinese singer A Duo, combines traditional music with physical theater to explore the intricate relationship between humanity and nature.

Presented by Hong Kong's iStage troupe, "Waiting for the Match 2" uses an intimate, claustrophobic setting to examine the emotional scars and unspoken struggles of contemporary women in marriage.

"The Mariana Trench," another Hong Kong production inspired by the folklore of Shunde in Guangdong, explores the theme of universal loneliness. This reimagined version features live music, a refreshed cast and an updated artistic vision.

Presented by Macao's Po Art Studio, "Dreamless Machine, Useless Class" invites the audience to act as "judges," questioning the role of technology and the absurdity of modern alienation.

In addition, Shenzhen Puppet Art Theater will bring storytelling, acrobatics, and traditional heritage to the center’s public spaces, offering an immersive experience for audiences of all ages.
