The newly renovated Huanggang Checkpoint in Futian District is scheduled to reopen July 1, according to China Media Group’s Radio the Greater Bay.
Chris Tang Ping-keung, secretary for security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, said May 30 that the main construction phase is largely finished. Current efforts are focused on installing and testing internal cooling systems and border inspection equipment.
Transitioning from a dual-purpose facility, the new checkpoint will cease cargo inspection services and operate exclusively under a joint-checkpoint, co-location model, according to the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily report.
This strategic shift is projected to slash customs clearance times from approximately 30 minutes to just five. Under this new arrangement, travelers arriving by vehicle will need to disembark only once to complete cross-border inspections for both Shenzhen and Hong Kong within the same building, the report said.
The new checkpoint is equipped with 134 e-channels and 68 manual counters, designed to handle a peak daily passenger volume of 200,000, with the capacity to scale up to 300,000 in the future.
Furthermore, the facility will offer seamless connectivity to five rail lines, including Shenzhen Metro Line 7 and the spur line of the Hong Kong MTR Northern Link.
Historically, Huanggang was Shenzhen’s only 24/7 land border crossing and one of the busiest in China. Its comprehensive redevelopment first began in June 2019.
