The “Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles” scheme is extended for another five years, until June 1, 2031, Guangdong's provincial government announced May 30.
The policy, which first took effect in June 2023, allows eligible Hong Kong car owners to drive into Guangdong via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, effective from July 1, 2023.
A similar “Northbound Travel for Macao Vehicles” scheme was extended in December last year and will expire Dec. 20, 2030.
According to the Nanfang Daily, since both policies took effect, the number of Hong Kong and Macao travelers passing through the bridge has increased at an average rate of 34% annually, reaching nearly 18 million in 2025. Border inspection authorities expect the figure to exceed 20 million in 2026.
