The Luohu District Writers’ Association Poetry Writing and Research Base was inaugurated at Shenzhen Wutong Primary School on April 26, as part of the third Wutong Mountain Poetry Festival. The event brought together more than 30 nationally acclaimed poets, as well as cultural and education officials.

Visitors were immersed in a vibrant poetic atmosphere in the school. Student poems inspired by Wutong Mountain were displayed along the walls. Works themed around an ancient camphor tree — living testimony to the school’s century-long history — captured the innocence and imagination of young writers. Interdisciplinary projects that blend poetry with math, art, and hands-on crafts showcased the school’s innovative approach to integrating poetry across the curriculum.

Zhang Xiujuan, the school principal, described the new base as a milestone in the school’s poetry education journey. The school is already recognized as a pioneer in Shenzhen’s “Chinese Poetry Education” initiative.

Yang Bing, chairperson of the Luohu District Federation of Literary and Art Circles, praised the school’s deep cultural foundations and its commitment to bringing poetry into everyday teaching. She hoped the base would serve as a bridge between professional writers and students, adding fresh momentum to Luohu’s literary community.

Renowned poet Yang Ke, a member of the China Writers’ Association, drew a parallel between the school’s name — Wutong (a tree believed to attract the phoenix) — and its century-old camphor tree, both symbolizing the nurturing of young minds through poetry.
