A group of 23 international students from Shenzhen University visited the Baguang Heritiera Wetland Park in Dapeng New Area on April 18, taking part in ecological observation and cultural tours.

Guided by Ou Wei, vice principal of the Baguang Nature School, the students explored a lush mangrove forest teeming with life. From the rare and valuable silver-leaf trees (Heritiera littoralis) to species like Avicennia marina and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, students discovered how these ancient trees form a living shield for the coastline.

The students visit the centuries-old Yanzao Ancient Village, learning about traditional architecture and the relationship between local communities and their natural surroundings.

The adventure continued at Yanzao Village, a 300-year-old Hakka village where volunteers shared stories of local history, plants, and the intricate balance of the mangrove ecosystem.

During an interaction session, participants shared perspectives on environmental protection and sustainability, turning the visit into a cross-cultural dialogue on ecological issues.

For many students, the trip was more than just a nature walk — it became a source of inspiration for research on biodiversity and urban ecology. As one student put it, “This experience helped me see Shenzhen not just as a tech city, but as a place that values nature and sustainable living.”

Founded in 2020, the Baguang Nature School is one of only seven national nature schools in Shenzhen, certified by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Through hands-on learning, it connects communities with the environment.

Shenzhen University will host upcoming events on World Environment Day, International Day for Biological Diversity, and National Ecology Day to help young people build a closer relationship with nature.
