Shenzhen airport allows 20-minute check-in on select routes

Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport will allow passengers on two high-frequency domestic routes to check in as late as 20 minutes before departure, as it trials new measures to speed up travel for business and frequent flyers.

The policy applies to Shenzhen Airlines-operated routes linking Shenzhen with the Beijing Capital and Shanghai Hongqiao airports. On these pilot routes, passengers without checked baggage can complete check-in up to 20 minutes before departure, while those with checked baggage must check in at least 30 minutes before takeoff.

The airport said the trial could be expanded to additional routes in the future, potentially offering greater flexibility for time-sensitive travelers.

Separately, the Shenzhen airport has teamed up with four domestic carriers — Air China, Shenzhen Airlines, Shandong Airlines and Kunming Airlines — to shorten check-in cut-off times across a wider range of domestic flights departing Shenzhen.

Under the revised rules, passengers with checked baggage must check in at least 35 minutes before departure, compared with 38 minutes previously. Those traveling without checked baggage can now check in up to 30 minutes before departure.

The measures are aimed at streamlining passenger processing and reducing overall travel time, the airport said.

In addition, the Shenzhen airport and Shenzhen Airlines have introduced a flexible same-day ticket change service on the Shenzhen–Beijing Capital route. Passengers holding eligible tickets — priced at 65% of the standard fare or higher — can switch to another flight on the same route and in the same class on the day of travel at no extra cost.

The improvements follow a series of upgrades at one of China’s busiest aviation hubs, which handles more than 60 million passengers annually. Airport authorities said enhancements in check-in, security screening, baggage handling and ground transportation have enabled the shorter processing times.

In June 2025, the Shenzhen airport became the first major Chinese hub of its size to reduce domestic flight check-in cut-off time to 38 minutes before departure. Earlier this year, it introduced a “15-minute boarding” service with China Southern Airlines on the Shenzhen–Beijing Daxing route, allowing passengers without checked baggage to complete check-in, security and boarding within 15 minutes of departure.

Check-in cut-off times for domestic flights operated by other airlines at the Shenzhen airport remain at 38 minutes before departure. Passengers are advised to plan accordingly and arrive at the airport in advance.
