5 Shenzhen universities on ARWU Best Chinese Universities list

The latest edition of Best Chinese University Ranking by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was recently released, with five Shenzhen universities making the list. Notably, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has entered the national top 30 for the first time.

Launched in 2015, the annual ARWU Best Chinese University Ranking has gained widespread recognition for its professional, objective and transparent methodology, and is now considered one of the most influential and authoritative university rankings in China.

Shenzhen universities on the list

SUSTech ranked 30th nationwide, marking a milestone for the fast-rising institution, which entered the ranking for the first time in 2018 placing 43th. 

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-SZ) placed 39th, and has maintained its position as the top ranking joint university for the seven consecutive year.

Shenzhen University ranked 66th, while Shenzhen MSU-BIT University came in at 108th and ranking sixth among joint universities. Shenzhen Technology University was placed 283rd.

Guangdong maintains strong presence

Across Guangdong Province, Sun Yat-sen University remained the top-ranked institution despite slipping slightly from 12th to 13th.

A total of 11 universities from the province made it into the national top 100, including SUSTech (30th), South China University of Technology (32nd), CUHK-SZ (39th), Southern Medical University (42nd), Jinan University (59th), Shenzhen University (66th), South China Normal University (79th), Guangzhou Medical University (79th), Guangdong University of Technology (96th), and Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine (98th).

National highlights

Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Zhejiang University secured the top three positions in the ranking.

In discipline-specific rankings, Peking Union Medical College retained its top spot among medical universities, while Beijing University of Chinese Medicine led the ranking for traditional Chinese medicine universities.

Shanghai University of Finance and Economics ranked first among finance and economics universities, Beijing Foreign Studies University topped the language universities category, and China University of Political Science and Law led the political science and law rankings.
