Shenzhen has introduced new traffic rules for electric bicycles in an effort to address growing safety concerns over electric bicycle-related traffic risks.
Under the new policy, e-bikes are prohibited from riding on motorways or sidewalks where non-motorized lanes are designated.
The aim is to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety, according to city transportation authorities. Separated lanes have already been established at the intersection of Huafu Road and Zhenhua Road West in Huaqiangbei, Futian District.
“I no longer have to worry about e-bikes traveling in the wrong direction thanks to these new rules,” said Ms. Wang, who was waiting to cross the road. Another resident, Mr. Li, added, “These regulations will help prevent pedestrian accidents and save commuting time.”
The Shenzhen Traffic Management Bureau of Public Security has also clarified that specific driving directions apply within non-motorized lanes. Overtaking and riding against traffic are strictly prohibited. Violators will be fined 50 yuan (about US$6.9).
