DHL to open new Shenzhen hub in second half of 2026

German logistics giant DHL Express is set to launch its "super gateway" in Shenzhen during the second half of this year, CEO John Pearson told China Daily earlier this week.

The new facility, an upgrade of the existing DHL Shenzhen Port at the Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, is designed to boost capacity for e-commerce and time-critical shipments. Once operational, the gateway will enhance operational efficiency and strengthen connectivity between China and global markets through new cargo routes.

"China remains an indispensable pillar in the evolution of global supply chains," Pearson said, noting that the country is transitioning from a manufacturing powerhouse into a hub for innovation and demand — particularly in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and cross-border e-commerce.

DHL, the first international express provider to enter Shenzhen in 1993, is now repositioning its network to align with shifting trade lanes between China, Europe, Southeast Asia, and emerging markets. As part of its "Strategy 2030," the company will focus its investments on China's high-growth sectors, including life sciences, healthcare, and green energy.

Beyond physical infrastructure, DHL plans to accelerate digitalization in China by deploying AI, robotics, and data analytics. Pearson emphasized that DHL’s role has evolved from a traditional service provider into a strategic partner, helping Chinese brands export innovation while facilitating high-quality imports via platforms like the China International Import Expo.

With a fleet of 275 cargo aircraft and a global workforce of 584,000, DHL is targeting its investment on high-growth markets, identifying 20 priority countries including China, Hungary, Mexico, and Vietnam.
