The 2026 Sea Urchin Season in Dapeng New Area has opened, with events running through June to coincide with the peak harvest season between the Qingming Festival and Dragon Boat Festival.

Centered in the coastal town of Nan’ao, the festival combines seafood cuisine with cultural and tourism activities, aiming to attract visitors during the spring and early summer travel period.

Organizers said a range of themed events are being rolled out through June, including hands-on sea urchin opening experiences and folk performances. Visitors can sample dishes such as sea urchin sashimi and zongzi (rice dumplings), while also taking part in activities showcasing local fishing traditions and intangible cultural heritage.

A sea urchin cooking competition and tasting event is scheduled for May, bringing together local restaurants to present creative dishes, with visitors invited to join as public judges.

In June, a themed market will be held alongside the Greater Bay Area Dragon Boat Race, featuring seafood specialties, cultural products and local souvenirs.
