Intl. young scholars explore new frontiers in neuroscience in Shenzhen

Young scholars from China and around the world gathered at Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology (SUAT) on Jan. 29 for an international exchange program focused on the latest developments in neuroscience.

Held as part of the 2nd Greater Bay Area Neuroscience Conference, the program brought together 27 international graduate students from 15 countries, including Germany, Canada and the United States. It featured academic discussions, one-on-one exchanges between Chinese and international students, research visits and cultural activities.

The one-on-one pairing program was designed to encourage open dialogue among young researchers. Participants shared research ideas and experiences, discussed scientific challenges and exchanged views on the latest findings in neuroscience.

Helmut Kettenmann, dean of the Bio-X International Institute, said young researchers are a key driving force for scientific innovation. He said the program aims to break down academic barriers and lay a foundation for long-term international research collaboration and joint training of young scientists.

The international students also visited major research facilities in Shenzhen. The visits gave them a closer look at major science infrastructure and interdisciplinary research in neuroscience and synthetic biology.

Sydney Reil from the United States said she was impressed by SUAT’s advanced research facilities and campus environment, as well as the friendliness of its faculty and students.

Beyond academic exchange, the program included cultural activities such as making traditional Chinese lacquer fans. Participants also explored Shenzhen and its development as a technology and innovation hub.

Adam Sanowski from Canada said Shenzhen’s rapid development over the past several decades and its strong innovation atmosphere had given him confidence in the prospects for collaboration in the Greater Bay Area.
